IPhone-3G-S-box-5

Apple iPhone 3Gs large

Grade A Box Contents:

  • Official Apple triangle wall plug
  • Apple earphones with mic
  • Apple Dock to USB cable
  • Documentation
  • SIM tray pin

Test Proceedure:

  • Verify visual inspection
Pay careful attention to condition to
the metal rim, especialy around power/lock button and charger port. This is far more likely to become scratched than the glass and less noticable.
Check that the USB adapter sits parallel to the body of the phone and that the gap between the plastic of the plug and the phone is not too pronounced. Pocket-fluff and general crap builds up inside the port over time.
The back of the phone is very prone to crack and split, so just make sure that it is all in tact, as even the smallest crack automatically makes the phone grade F. The most common places for the back to crack are around the charger port, speaker, screws, SIM tray and headphone port.
The headphones are also of concern being both expensive to replace and in-ear. If you wouldn't put them in your ears return them to the customer and regrade the phone appropriately. The headphones should be official Apple and include the inline buttons/mic for Control Talk.
The home button is notorious for becoming unresponsive over time. Lightly press the button several times and ensure that the phone consistently reacts without needing to apply excessive pressure.
Ensure that it is actually an iPhone 3GS, not just a 3G. The easiest way to tell is to check if the writing on the back of the phone is shiny. If it is, then it should be a 3GS, HOWEVER, always Checkmend the phone to double check in case the customer has had a new back put on the phone.
  • Moisture indicators
Small white circular sticker at bottom of 3.5mm headphone jack turns red when exposed to water
  • IMEI confirmation
Dial *#06# with valid SIM inserted OR Settings>General>About - Check software matches test receipt. There is an IMEI number present on the SIM tray but it is not to be trusted as they are often replaced.
  • Checkmend
Always use IMEI from HANDSET not box or test receipt
  • Factory reset
Only restore the 3GS through iTunes as doing it on the device itself can brick the phone.
Use this opportunity to check the size of the memory of the phone through iTunes. DO NOT take the size from the box, as people regularly use different boxes.
  • Verify data deleted
  • Charge test
Make note of charge percentage before and after charging and rate of discharge under normal use. iPhone batteries being internal are covered under full 12 month warranty not 28 day consumable warranty.
  • WiFi/Bluetooth test
Blutooth on all iPhone models is for hands free only, file transfer is unavailable
  • Network check
All Orange/T-Mobile handsets should be checked for cross-compatibility and bought in as EE if appropriate.
  • Camera test
Front and rear facing cameras should be tested for colour and image sharpness, even small scratches on lenses can cause significant blurring.
  • Call test
On the rare occassions call tests are impossible (i.e. poor 3 network reception) voice memos can be recorded and played back as a last resort. DOUBLE CHECK CHECKMEND. Try the call volume as loud as it will go, if it sounds distorted, fail it.
  • Speaker test
When in doubt use youtube. Although there are two grilles visible at the bottom of the phone only one is a speaker - the other contains the mic. Try the volume as loud as it will go; if to sounds distorted, fail it.
  • Host connectivity
Covered by full restore in iTunes

During the visual inspection, ensure that it is actually an iPhone 4; the only difference visually between this and the 4s is the black lines that appear on the metal rim at the edge of the phone. If the black lines on the rim are only at the bottom of the phone and not the top, it is an iPhone 4.
